Just like in our best armor segment, a best pickaxe really doesn’t exist, just like the best armor, right? Well, it’s not exactly true as with armor, it can influence your battle style, but whereas mining comes in to play, you can’t really be a mage or a ranged miner, so you need to play by the rules and with those strict rules comes a chance for one special pickaxe to emerge victorious over the others. But for the sake of your knowledge and information, we’ll list every one of these pickaxes for a complete Terraria pickaxe list and highlight the most notable ones.

How to make pickaxes in Terraria? It’s simple, just craft them at an anvil or ancient manipulator in case of Luminite Pickaxes.

The list (by no particular order)

  • Tungsten Pickaxe – 12 Tungsten bars and 4 pieces of wood near an iron or Lead anvils. It’s the first pickaxe that can mine meteorite. It’s also the fastest.
  • Molten Pickaxe
  • Reaver shark – well this is a weird one… It’s a shark that can be used in hardmode to mine cobalt and Palladium. It’s 30% faster than the Molten Pickaxe and looks like a shark… It is a shark actually and can be obtained by the help of a reinforced fishing pole with ~30 worms.
  • Luminite Pickaxes – not crafted in the anvils, instead on the ancient manipulators, these are the fastest and the most powerful pickaxes.
  • Picksaw
  • Spectre Pickaxe
  • Chlorophyte Pickaxe
  • Pickaxe Axe – two in one
  • Shroomite Digging Claw – the best tool for digging in the axe category
  • Titanium Pickaxe
  • Adamantite Pickaxe
  • Orichalcum Pickaxe
  • Mythril Pickaxe
  • Palladium Pickaxe
  • Cobalt Pickaxe
  • Molten Pickaxe
  • Deathbringer Pickaxe
  • Nightmare Pickaxe
  • Platinum Pickaxe
  • Gold Pickaxe
  • Candy Cane Pickaxe
  • Bone Pickaxe
  • Silver Pickaxe
  • Lead Pickaxe
  • Iron Pickaxe
  • Cactus Pickaxe – ever wondered what it would feel like to mine with a cactus, well you can find out.
  • Copper Pickaxe – you start out with this one
  • Tin pickaxe

Although the Luminite may have the best stats and the digging claw is the best in its own right, the people tend to agree that the Picksaw is the best, to some by far. It can’t be crafted and is dropped by the Golem boss (12.5% chance of a drop) so we would say that going with the gut of the players is just the right thing to do here. Not only does it mine pretty much anything it is a very handy weapon in combat. Others might lack its mobility and versatility.
