Five Nights at Freddy’s Will Hit the Big Screens…Eventually

Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) has hit cult status in the video game world with a devoted fanbase that loves every little thing about the franchise. There are currently 8 main iterations of the game and the latest – FNAF Security Breach – was released in December 2021. But fans of FNAF have long been advocating for a film based on the lore of the series, believing that the universe has a lot more to offer than purely a video game experience. It turns out, they’re right. A FNAF film is in the pre-production stages.

Staying True To The Game

The extreme popularity of the FNAF franchise has made it a mainstay in the gaming world since 2014, and its storyline and jump scares keep players coming back for more. It’s expected that a movie would stay true to the story to capitalize on this popularity, and if IMDb’s listing is anything to go by, it seems it has.

Based on the universe created in the video games, the plot of the movie follows protagonist Jason, a security guard working at the Freddy Fazbear Pizza Restaurant. Jason eventually discovers that the animatronics in the restaurant come alive at night and have a thirst for blood. The movie is simple in its plot, but fans of the series will be happy to see that it doesn’t stray far from its source material.

Producer Jason Blum Promises Release Despite Lengthy Delays

The production and filming of the movie have been a long and slow process. Warner Bros Pictures announced that they had acquired the rights to the FNAF filming all the way back in 2015. David Katzenberg, Seth Graeme-Smith, and Roy Lee joined the team as producers and teamed up with Scott Cawthon, creator of the video game franchise. The team promised to make a film that was as insane, terrifying, and adorable as the games were to first-time players. However, in 2017 the team broke up and filming was delayed, with Cawthon and Graeme-Smith citing “insurmountable problems in the movie industry” as the main reason the film could never be completed.

Production and filming were halted until 2018 when it was announced that a new team, including director Chris Columbus and producer Jason Blum, would see the project through to completion. Accompanying this announcement was a partial script leak that promised fans that the movie would follow the events of the first game, leaving room for a second and third movie. Jason Blum recently promised fans that the highly anticipated movie is still “in the works” and that they haven’t given up on the project just yet.

When Can Fans Expect Release?

All of the mishaps in production and filming make it near impossible to predict a release date for the FNAF film. The initial release date set back in 2018 was scheduled for 2020, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the movie was pushed back. Following this delay, filming was scheduled to start in 2021 but was delayed due to Scott Cawthon retiring from the business. Jason Blum made his promise to complete the movie in January of 2022, meaning that production and filming could be happening right now. Fans should be patient as everything points to a release either at the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.
