Overview

Clockwork Empires is a forthcoming steampunk and Lovecraft themed colony-building and management game that has you take the role of a Junior Bureaucrat (Colonial Grade) sent forth to "seek fame, promotions, and natural resources to feed the ravenous maw of Imperial Industry & Commerce", according to the game's press release on clockworkempires.com. In practice, this will involve trying to build and develop a colony of the Clockwork Empires (a fictionalized, steampunk Victorian Britain replete with airships and "Steam Knights") while managing the needs and wants of your colonists, who require copious amounts of food, water, and booze to deal with life on the frontier when they are not being terribly killed in tragic mining accidents or invasions by Beings from Beyond the Stars.

Gameplay

The core gameplay will resemble something between Dwarf Fortress and Age of Empires, with a number of colonists at your command who will generally follow your orders as long as they are kept well-fed, cared for, and liquored up. Each colonist will have certain personality traits that impacts how they will go about their tasks, how well they cope with tragedy, and other facets of their lives that ensures every game will tell it's own individual story, as the player attempts to keep all the aspects of their colony in line while fending off invasions of terrifying otherworldly creatures and cultists.

While Clockwork Empires lets you build an extensive colony with mines, workshops, distilleries, and other buildings with a complicated infrastructure of pipes and cogs, the real fun will be just in succeeding and growing your colony, but rather in leading it to its utter devastation and ruin - all for the greater glory of the Empire. The game rewards your noble attempts at taming the frontier and encourages you to forge your own colonial tales of despair, tragedy, cosmic horror, and cabbages.
