Overview

Carmageddon: Max Damage is the latest instalment in the Carmageddon series published on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on 8th July 2016 and Steam on 27th October 2016.

The game is a reboot of the first game in the series which was released back in 1997 and brings back many of the original environments and cars with new updates and additions.

Gameplay

Three game modes are available, Career mode, Freeplay and Multiplayer.

Career Mode

Career mode will see the player progress through 16 chapters with each containing a number of events. The next chapter is unlocked when the player earns enough credits. Events are split into 6 types:

  • Classic Carma
  • Death Race
  • Car Crusher
  • Ped Chase
  • Checkpoint Stampede
  • Fox 'N' Hounds

Classic Carma is the original event type. The event is won by either destroying all the opponent cars, of which there are five or completing the required number of laps or by killing all the pedestrians in the environment. The player will have to complete the event via one of the above methods within a time limit. More time can be gained by smashing up opponents, killing pedestrians and picking up time bonuses in barrels scattered throughout the environment.

Death Race can be completed like a regular race event. Complete the required number of laps before your opponents do to win. However, if you destroy an opponent car and they have completed a lap you will steal a lap from them.

In a Crush Crusher event you'll need to wreck the required number of opponents to win.

In Ped Chase the aim is to kill the indicated pedestrian before your opponents do. A pedestrian in the environment will be selected at random with a red light beam. Killing the target will gain you a point and a new target will be selected. Killing opponent vehicles who have points will enable you to steal a point from them.

Checkpoint Stampede works in a similar way to Ped Chase - a random checkpoint will spawn in the environment and you need to get to it before your opponents do. Killing opponent vehicles who have points will enable you to steal a point.

A Fox 'N' Hounds event will see one person selected at random as the Fox. All the other opponents will be required to chase after the Fox - hitting the Fox will transfer it to the hitter (like playing 'Tag'). You need to stay as the Fox for the specified time. Getting wrecked and also recovering will make you lose the fox automatically.

Freeplay Mode

This mode allows you to setup a series of events with whatever cars and settings you would like. Only content unlocked from Career mode will be available.

Multiplayer

Only four game modes are available in multiplayer due to it not featuring pedestrians, Car Crusher, Death Race, Checkpoint Stampede and Fox 'N' Hounds.

On Xbox One lobbies are automatically created based on what game mode you choose - custom games are not available. On PlayStation 4 players will able to create custom games with settings of their own choice.
