Dawn Patrol was heralded as one of the most technically impressive flight simulators of its day, using a 640x400 SVGA mode that allowed for 4 times the resolution of a standard VGA flight sim. The game's menu system was a series of hyperlinks in the form of an old book, detailing the of the war in the air as well as the lives of several famous fighter pilots. Missions ranged from dogfights to balloon bursting, spanning the years 1914-18. The player could choose to do fly each of the 150 missions as either the British or the Germans, in 13 period appropriate aircraft including the Sopwith Camel, SPAD 7 and The Red Baron's Fokker Triplane. The CD version of Dawn Patrol included 30 voice clips of speeches and anecdotes from commanders and pilots of the era, as well as a variety of wartime songs.
