Multiplayers games are of plenty now. But is there another game where you can CONTROL A SHARK? Definitely not! A unique concept and a fun idea is what Depth has already going for it. But besides the idea, there’s also one thing that’s important. The way the idea is developed and implemented.

A shark’s tale

There’s not a lot of indie games that reach the success level of Depth. This First-Person Shooter (the genre classification is a not what you would expect on a game with sharks) based on the unity engine. Released in 2014, Depth still has a decent following and players diving in to it daily. The game hasn’t got a narrative or a story. It’s just the players who join the lobby (Depth is multiplayer only) and play as either sharks or divers. Sharks have the objective to kill divers and don’t let them transport the submersible equipment while divers have to transport it and kill the shark.

The way each sides win:

  • Sharks: Divers run out of respawn points, destroying the submersible.
  • Divers: Sharks run out of respawns, submersible is transported to the location.

Divers have a pistol and harpoons, exploding weaponry and do anything in their power to stop the sharks. They also collect treasure to buy new items for killing the shark(s). On the other side of the fence, the sharks have different abilities depending on their species. Ones are more ferocious, while others are more nimble and agile. It really has a lot of variety to it and when playing with friends you can have a lot of laughs, scared shouts and positive emotions.

Depth has a good audio system that lets you know when something bad is about to go down. Trust us, when the environment changes and you hear the queue for the approaching shark, with your heartbeat getting faster, things get serious and quite scary. Sharks move quicker than the divers, but aren’t as agile so both sides have mobility advantages and disadvantages. Divers have guns, to damage from distance and the shark can only harm when physically coming in contact. Right now, on Steam, Depth costs 5 Euros, so I recommend you instantly buy this game with your friends and try out the fun you can have.

Speaking about the gameplay. It’s kill or be killed. There aren’t any story twists, complicated pay to win virtual currency systems or any features that should distract you from the pure and extremely fun experience of Depth. Shooting is mediocre and is just there for the damage. Recoil and gun physics seem not very underwater like. The guns shoot like on the surface, but that’s acceptable, no one said that this game should be very realistic. It doesn’t matter when it is fun to play. Moving is easy in all directions, but transporting the submersible can be a pain until you get used to it.

Ending our review, gamespedition would like to say that this game is worth the price it currently is valued at on Steam. While some mechanics are basic at best, crazy scheme and wildly fun and easy to pick-up concept make Depth a game worth being in your library.
