Finding The Best Games For Game of Thrones

The latest season of Game of Thrones is finally here and fans are eager to return to the land of Westeros to see what their favorite characters are up to. The seventh season of the show is moving quickly and with only one more year left until the grand finale, the different stories are moving toward their conclusions. While there's still plenty of time left for the television show, fans might already be looking for more ways to get their GoT fix. That's why there's always video games. Plenty of games based on the books and HBO series have been released, and many of them weave their own stories within the world of Westeros. For those that just can't get enough Game of Thrones, we decided to look back and put together a list of the best games for GoT enthusiasts.

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

The Telltale game expands the world of GoT with a completely original story that introduces new characters (and noble families) to the world. It revolves around House Forrester and its attempts to save itself following the War of the Five Kings. This adventure also happened to be one of the complimentary games for PlayStation Plus subscribers for July so there's never been a better time to dive into this rich narrative. It was well received by both fans and critics, and a second season is currently in development, although there's no word yet on when it might come out. Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series is available for consoles, PCs and mobile devices.

Game of Thrones (2012)

Cyanide's 2012 RPG is one of the few games that actually puts you in the middle of what's happening in the popular TV show. The game takes place during season one of Game of Thrones and plays like a standard action-adventure role-playing game similar to Skyrim. The story is original but happens on the same timeline as the first book and has the player take on the role of an heir to a noble house and a member of the Night's Watch. This one wasn't as well received as the other games on this list but still has a respectable score on Steam. For all its faults, it still tells a gripping story that's worth your time. One fun fact about this game is that it features a cameo from author George R.R. Martin as a maester!

Game of Thrones Slot

This option is perfect for the GoT nerd that doesn't have a lot of time on their hands. The other options are terrific, but they're also much more involved. This online slot reel brings the houses of Westeros from the castle to the casino. The easy-to-play title is mentioned among the available games in a review of one popular platform, and gives the Seven Kingdoms the slot treatment with sights and sounds from the series. This is a wonderful way for fans to quickly get their game on with their favorite house, either at home or on the go.

Crusader Kings II: Game of Thrones

This is actually a PC mod for the real-time strategy game Crusader Kings II, but it's been called the perfect Game of Thrones game. Game of Thrones is a property that begs for a great RTS and this is the closest we're probably ever going to get. Crusader Kings II is a deep and complex, and lends itself well to being adapted to the GoT universe. The mod is a total conversion of the original game that replaces the Crusader Kings map with that of Westeros and turns all the characters and sides into their counterparts from the books. This is a must-play for Thrones fans and can be found for PC, provided you have a copy of the original game, which can usually be had for pretty cheap these days.
