The game was developed by under the name Psyk Software and supports two players over LAN and style mouse based targeting. Ammo and weapons are spread across the levels, and there's a built-in map editor.

Two sequels were in the works in the years following Red Pixel's release. In 2002 a demo for Red Pixel 2 was released, including online multiplayer support, but the game was never finished. Another attempt called Red Pixel 3 was made in 2006, but never got past a single level demo either.
