Overview
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure is a 2D side-scrolling platformer developed and published by for the (in conjunction with Redline Games) and in late 1994.
A sequel and re-imagining of the 1982 game , The Mayan Adventure stars , son of (the protagonist from the original game). When the elder Harry is captured off-screen by the dreaded warrior spirit Zakelua, it's up to the younger Harry to journey through the Mayan ruins to search for him.
The game is known for its smooth animation (as one of the final projects of animation studio , best known for the 1992 film ) and soundtrack by . It also contains numerous references to the original game, including a playable version as a hidden .
The game was later ported in 1995 to the , the (by and Zombie Virtual Reality Entertainment), the (by and co-published by ), and the (by ). All of these versions contain updated graphics and audio, along with additional levels. The Jaguar version is unique as it is the last Activision game released for an Atari console and is the only game to be co-published with Atari themselves). The SNES version was also released in Japan by on July 1995 as PITFALL: Maya no Daibouken (loosely translated to "Pitfall: The Adventures of Maya"). The Genesis version was later released in South America by sometime in 1997.
It was later ported to the in 2001 by , released by in North America on June 10 and in Europe on September 21. The Genesis version was later digitally re-released for the (via ) on April 13, 2009 (and was later de-listed on January 1, 2014).
