Metro 2033 is an FPS and survival video game based on Russian novel of the same name. The game is set in post-apocalyptic decorations of Moscow Metro. In this game, you will play as Artyom, the main protagonist, and survivor from VDNKh station. More detailed plot and gameplay feature you can find in related guides.

Here we will focus on several secrets, hidden features, and cheats for Metro 2033. Similar to other games it can be boosted with trainers. Also, you can manually modify game files activate special options. But let’s start with glitches and secrets of the game which can help you to beat the game.

Gameplay tips

There are several features which newcomers may not notice. All of options and secrets are listed below so you can exploit them to receive in-game advantages. Note also that if you are in tough situation try to choose a lower difficulty level to beat certain episode. Here you will find tips about non-obvious locations of valuable items, advice about money and unique features of game mechanics. The list is here:

  • Free money in the Armory mission.

At the Kuznetsky Most station during the Armory mission, you will meet Andrew. There is a lot of ammo and weapons in his cabin and you can grab them easily. After that just move to the shop and trade or sell loot. Normally, weapons can bring you 100-200 money – in this world, people use cartridges for the weapon as money. If you want to trade make sure to grab Duplet which is one of the best shotguns in the game. Also, buy equipment and ammo for next missions.

  • 2 suits at once.

Don’t finish the Armory mission too fast as here is another tip. Look for vendors near the final stage. One of them can sell you a Stealth Suit for 100 weapon cartridges. Another trader sells an Armor Suit for the same amount of local money. It’s not obvious, but you can wear both suits at once and receive all bonuses! Keep some money for at least one item. Note also that you can buy an Armor Suit later during the Polis mission.

  • Hidden night vision goggles.

This valuable item can be found during the Frontline mission. Once you have returned control of Artyom turn back. There are tracks that lead to darkness. Follow this way till you see soldiers and a red box near them. Night vision goggles are right in this box. To grab them you should neutralize or simply kill soldiers. Metro 2033 is not about stealth so feel free to eliminate enemies. But keep an eye on ammo as cartridges are also money in this game.

  • Safe pumping without discharging.

Some weapons such as Tihar or Helsing can discharge when you are pumping them. The thing is that button for pumping and button for primary fire are the same. Thus, while switching from pumping mode to firing one you can occasionally discharge weapons. We suggest using the alternative fire button to pump your Tihar or Helsing. So far as these weapons have only aiming option for alternative fire button you can safely pump them with it.

  • Quest locations in the Cursed mission.

It’s one of the most difficult maps where you have to locate several objects. At first, stand before Khan so he will behind your back. Then find bombs which are at the end of a rightmost tunnel. Place bombs at the left tunnel on overlaps at his end. Also, place bombs at the airlock which you can reach by the stairs to the right of Khan. Be sure to place each bomb to beat the mission successfully.

  • Indicator of important choices.

Metro 2033 features a pair of endings, which can be classified as a good final and a bad one. You can reach a bad ending simply playing the game, but for a good one, you should think about every action and choice. To facilitate indication of essential choices developers added special markers. The world around you twinkles with a color of rust and you can hear a slight whispering at the moment of moral choice. Indicators are the same for good and bad choices.

  • Extended effect of the filter.

Finally, we have a pretty obvious tip which can help you a lot. The world in the game is polluted with radiation so all characters have to wear air filters. Effect of each filter is limited in time so far as items spend their resources. But you can increase duration of each filter significantly. Just don’t sprint or jump without the need so you will consume less air. Walk or crawl to save your filters.

References

Metro 2033 isn’t filled with Easter eggs and secrets, but developers decided to pay homage to iconic S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. We have noticed only 4 references, but you can contact us and provide proofs of other Easter eggs. For now, let’s reveal our finds:

  1. Some dead people can be found with winter masks similar to ones in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
  2. The scene where heroes gather around the campfire and listen to guitar is a reference.
  3. The first encountered person says «Take it easy bro!» which hints at loner stalkers.
  4. In the Library mission, you can find a Roadside Picnic book that inspired Stalker movie, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. books, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games as well.

Cheats and trainers

Well, now let’s discover real cheats which can modify game memory and game files. We recommend creating backups of all files before you will change them. Some versions of the game as well as certain builds of operating systems can crush after changes. So create backups!

For now, there is only one way to enable cheats. You have to change the user.cfg file with any text editor in the main game directory. Find their lines with «g_global_god off» and «g_god off» and replace «off» statement with «on» analog in both cases. These changes enable God Mode with immortality and other cool features. You also can enable infinite ammo replacing «off» with «on» in «g_unlimitedammo off» line.

Finally, trainers for Metro 2033 can facilitate the game. As usual, there are a lot of programs which change only game memory without editing game files. You have to download the desired trainer, unpack it where you want and activate. Then start the game and press buttons that are listed in the instruction for a trainer. You know that numbers after + marks in titles indicate a total amount of available options in the certain trainer.

Basically, all trainers with fewer options, for example, +6 or +7, include infinite health, ammo, and money, unlimited valuable items and resource of filters or flashlights. Other trainers from with 15 and more options include in addition super sprints and jumps, increased accuracy, a rate of fire and damage, infinite firing without reloading or overheat.

Enjoy the game!
