Games from Outlast series offer specific gameplay without battles. Yes, you cannot attack, block hits or kill enemies in a general way. Hostiles can be defeated only in cutscenes after certain actions performed. But before this, you have to hide, run and trick all encountered foes. They are bloody, terrible, big and smart sometimes. It’s not so easy to beat the game if you don’t know about features of enemies.

We can help with it! This guide offers complete descriptions of enemies both from the original game and DLC. Let’s start.

The Variants

It’s not obvious, but all encountered enemies except the last boss belong to the Variants. This group unites patients, inmates and former workers of Mount Massive Asylum. They are altered by cruel experiments of former Nazis so now almost all of them are crazy mutants. However, mutations can be different: from an extremely large carcass and supernatural power to high agility with slim body. Exact mental illness or disorder depends on experiments conducted on victims. There are several groups of the Variants:

  • Patients hostile to the protagonist;
  • Neutral patients who attack only in close proximity;
  • Completely neutral and apathetic patients;
  • Patients who can help the protagonist with hints or guides.

There are also regular patients who are not clever at all and several enemies with higher IQ. They can open doors instead of breaking through them, ambush the protagonist and speak with him. Here we will focus on all notable encounters with enemies. Neutral and helpful NPCs are not described here. Also, be ready for spoilers.

Enemies in Outlast

During the game, you will play as Miles Upshur and encounter a lot of patients and workers in the asylum. They are mostly neutral and can attack you only in a close range. But there are 3 significant enemies who want to kill or torture you. Remember that you cannot fight with them and can only hide to make your way through the asylum:

  • Chris Walker.

It’s one of the most memorable enemies in the game. Chris is a former security officer in Murkoff Corporation, a big goon with a child-like mind. He worked as a guard for certain time until he killed his colleagues and inmates of another clinic. Then Murkoff agents captured Chris only to turn him into a patient of Mount Massive Asylum. Their scientists conducted series of experiments that resulted in several mutations both of Waler’s mind and body.

Playing as Miles Upshur you will encounter Chris Walker in the 1st location during a scripted scene of reaching the atrium. Then Chris will chase you for the almost entire game. Try to hide and squeeze through bottlenecks to trick him. It’s easy to realize that Walker has spotted you as he calls Miles «little pig». However, in underground labs, this mutant will be crushed by the Walrider who probably want to protect you.

Chris Walker is a pretty clever guy. He cannot open doors and just breaks them, but he can check lockers and beds where Miles probably hides. Walker is the strongest among all mutants in the asylum, but his hits are not deadly. Means you can survive his first attack and run away. However, we suggest crawling silently in the shadows as Chris has not very good vision. Also, try to locate narrow passages through which Walker cannot squeeze.

At all, this enemy is the most popular so far as he looks for you during all missions.

  • The Twins.

Here we have two strange brothers who always walk together. They are surely psychopaths, but Father Martin can interact with them. The Twins surprisingly wants to kill Miles and eat his organs, but Martin asks them to spare you. Brothers most likely were conjoined before events of the game. They are completely naked, silent and pretty spooky. The Twins hold machetes and cleavers that can kill Miles with a direct hit.

These enemies are shown for the first time during the 2nd mission. They start as neutral NPCs thanks to Father Martin. However, they will chase you and speak about your tongue and liver they want to taste. Later, the Twins become hostile and you have to avoid them. Remember it as the game tries to trick you. Brothers will become neutral again once you reach the Chapel where Father Martin is.

It’s quite difficult enemies with several features. At first, two brothers are more dangerous than a single enemy. They can split up to cover different ways and catch you. Also, the Twins are clever as hell. They will open doors, check hideouts, plan their movement etc. Be extremely careful so far as they are silent. Running can be good idea because they don’t sprint at all and only walk for you. Note that even a single hit of any brother will kill you.

Subjectively, the Twins are the most difficult enemies in the game.

  • Richard Trager.

Miles Upshur should hate this enemy more than others. Richard Trager was a manager in Murkoff Corporation before the incident. He was pretty intelligent and gentle, but too avid for women. Rick raped one of his workers, then he was blamed and fired. At the moment of firing, he stabbed a pregnant woman in the stomach several times. Murkoff guards instantly decided to put Richard in Mount Massive Asylum and conduct experiments on him.

You will face Richard Trager during the 4th mission. That maniac decides to be a surgeon, torture patients, and workers, explore human biology. He catches you and speaks gently at first but reveals his true nature a little after. During that time you can only watch scripted scenes in one of which Doc cuts your fingers with giant scissors. Then you should run away and reach the elevator. Rick will chase you during entire mission, but will be killed by moving the elevator.

A doctor is more intelligent than Chris Walker surely. He realizes events in the asylum and even can speak as a healthy man. But he is also a psycho sadist that can be tricked this way. For example, after your escape, Trager will check different hideouts in rooms. This allows you to run away again when he is in the most distant part of the certain hall. Be sure to close doors as this can slow down Doc. Also, he cannot kill you with a single hit like the Twins.

Richard Trager may be the strangest encounter, but his mission is pretty easy to complete.

Besides these enemies near the end of the game, you will face the Walrider controlled be Billie Hope. The Walrider is an entity made of thousands of nanoparticles. It’s a kind of swarm which can move through every obstacle except disinfection gateways. The Walrider is a cause of chaos inside the asylum and you have to stop it. Originally this entity is controlled by Billy Hope, one of the patients. He is in a coma so it’s easy to kill him and deactivate the Walrider.

Enemies in Outlast: Whistleblower

Spoilers continue to appear in this paragraph as well! You may think that the Walrider is gone, but events of Outlast: Whistleblower proves otherwise. After losing his original host the Walrider possesses Miles Upshur. So, you, playing as Waylon Park, will encounter this enemy in DLC as well. Chris Walker, the Twins, and Richard Trager are secondary characters and can be faced rarely. In addition, this game features other notable enemies:

  • Frank Manera.

It’s the 1st notable hostile that you can face during the game. Frank was a patient in Mount Massive Asylum, one of Murkoff’s victims. He took part in experiments for creating the Walrider. Frank was a cannibal even before the incident in the asylum but reveals his deviations after it completely. He holds an electric chainsaw, kills both workers and patients, eats them and patrols an area near the cafeteria.

You will face Manera in the kitchen where he is neutral to the protagonist. But during the next encounter, this maniac becomes hostile as he wants to taste Waylon. Hide or run until you reach the morgue. Enjoy scripted scenes there in which Cannibal starts to attack you with his saw. Then Frank will put you into the furnace. You will surely escape, but we don’t know the fate of Manera. The last time he is seen screaming as you proceed to the 3rd location.

Despite all differences, Frank Manera is quite similar to Richard Trager.

  • Eddie Gluskin.

It’s another notable enemy that is located in the 6th mission. Eddie is also a patient in the asylum. Documents and comics reveal that he was sexually abused in his childhood by father and uncle. Before the incident, you can see him begging for help while Murkoff guards put him into a camera. Probably, Eddie remembers Waylon as he looks directly at the protagonist. Further events, however, are defined by this encounter.

You will face free Gluskin when he searches a bride. Maniac catches men in the asylum and tries to turn them into women by cutting off their genitals and modifying chests. Another patient called Dennis wanting to save his own life brings you to Eddie. There will be several cutscenes and playable episodes where you have to hide from the Groom. Finally, he will hang himself accidentally. At the end, Eddie will mark that you «could have been beautiful» together.

Gameplay tips for Eddie Gluskin are similar to other enemies.

  • Jeremy Blaire.

Well, it’s the main antagonist, but we cannot mark him as a regular enemy. Jeremy Blaire is your direct employee before the incident. He spotted your e-mail to Miles Upshur and becomes angry. After the Walrider escape, Jeremy tries to find and stop you to prevent an information leak. But he appears only in cutscenes! That’s why Blaire isn’t an enemy – you just cannot interact with him.

Anyway, the Walrider will crush him to let you run away from the asylum.

These enemies may be horrible and eerie, but they are not so difficult. If you are good at stealth games and have a strong psychic it will be easy to deal with the Variants. Good luck!
