Like most games in the series, you can either design and build routes, or play through existing ones that come with the game, with additional addon content available for download. The new features of this edition are the following:

Collector's Edition

A was by Auran on their forums on March 18th 2011. Only 2500 copies will be produced. This edition consists of the following:

• 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition Metal Case, signed by the entire team
• The Trainz Simulator 12 game
• An individually numbered certificate
• Keyboard shortcuts chart for both Driver and Surveyor modes
• Poster
• 30-day First Class Ticket for priority access and download speed for the Download Station, with a 20% discount on a longer First Class Ticket order
• 245 page extended collector's manual

In addition, 10 of the 2500 copies will contain a Golden Ticket which gives the following:

• A lifetime First Class Ticket for the Download Station
• Free retail products for 5 years (May 1, 2011 to May 1, 2016)
• An opportunity to be created into a virtual driver in the game
