Overview

Focusing on self-cooperation, Rewind is a first-person puzzle game where the player uses three clones and must rewind time to progress through an abandoned facility located on a desolate island. Guided by an ever-present voice who is responsible for the player's progress, they're tasked with navigating a series of abandoned buildings on the island facility to escape; all while trying to remember how they got there in the first place.

While there are first-person shooter elements to Rewind, it's not a traditional FPS. Enemy AI units who are programmed to protect the facility operate as pieces to any given area's puzzle. The curiously genial ever-present voice is tasked with helping the player understand individual core puzzle concepts through the main story and are eventually left to exercise their understanding of these concepts working simultaneously later in the campaign.

Rewind is the successor to Prometheus, an Unreal Tournament 3 mod which was one of the grand final winners of 2008's Make Something Unreal Contest.

Gameplay

Rewind's gameplay is focused on cooperating with one's own self. Players must navigate through AI laser-gun wielding enemies, password protected doors, breakable glass, elevators, foot pads, and moving platforms to escape. There is a first person shooter element that uses enemies as pieces of a puzzle as opposed to being the focus of the player's objectives.

The main mechanic in Rewind is, of course, rewinding time. Using this mechanic allows the player to perform, rewind, and save the actions of a clone. By doing this, the player can cooperatively solve puzzles that they couldn't otherwise. Some puzzles require the player to record over a clone that has already recorded an action. If the original action isn't replicated correctly or in a timely fashion, it can cause a paradox, which the player would need to fix by either fully rewinding and re-recording an action, or partially rewinding their current clone's actions to fix their mistake.

Story

Featuring a fully voice-acted story, Rewind's nameless protagonist wakes up in an abandoned facility that spans a completely uninhabited island. She is greeted by a jovial ever-present male voice whose responsibility it is to get the protagonist to the exit. Their conversation spans the main campaign of the game, trying to make sense of the situation they've found themselves in.

Contents

Rewind's main story campaign consists of seven connected facilities with seven individual puzzle areas each. There are time trials for each individual non-tutorial puzzle area. Much like other Steam releases, Rewind will feature achievements, trading cards, emotes, and backgrounds.
