Overview

Lava Inferno level 5-1: "Toasted"

Deranged Rabbits is a action platformer where the player takes control of Fluffy the bunny in his quest for carrots and cabbages, avoiding highly lethal obstacles and generally attempting to clear each level as fast as possible. The game currently has 75 levels across five distinctly themed worlds, such as Happy Grasslands or Lava Inferno.

The game features a soundtrack inspired by 8-bit videogames, composed by EliteFerrex.

Development

Deranged Rabbits was originally known as Easter Bunny Adventure, an entry to the Game Maker Finland spring game jam of 2011 by Mikko "Micco" Nykyri (Simp-pelit). The game was then abandoned for some time, until the founding of the indie game publisher Grove Comp. Nykyri was approached with the possibility of publishing his game, and it has been in semi-active development since.

Having been completely transformed, Deranged Rabbits was released on May 30th 2015 on , . Although developed for PC first and foremost, the game was eventually experimentally released on for Android devices. A free trial version was made available for both platforms, where an oft amusing price tag of "1,99" with no stated currency was quoted. When the game was finally on February 26th, it was pulled from the market for redevelopment.

Tweaking and bugfixing was conducted by the project lead and main developer Mikko Nykyri based on extensive feedback, while (developers of ) provided new and improved graphics for the game, courtesy of artist Valery Kim.

Deranged Rabbits was published on Steam on 29th July. The game is planned to ported for Android, Linux, Mac, and possibly iOS.

Graphics

The game features pixelated retro style graphics. Prior to being approved on , the game graphics had been created by Mikko Nykyri personally. The graphics style had remained largely the same from the 2011 game jam, although small improvements were made.

The current graphical elements have been created by Valery Kim, and provided to Grove Comp by the game developer .

Gameplay

The game is a traditional action platformer, where the player must navigate around lethal obstacles such as spikes, sawblades, or wrecking balls in order to collect carrots. By collecting carrots the player will unlock further levels. If the player finishes any given level quickly enough, they are also rewarded a cabbage and a sufficient number of cabbages will unlock special game modes. The game contains blood and gore upon the death of the bunny, although this feature can be turned on or off in the options menu.

Players who have cleared all 75 levels of the game will unlock a speedrun mode, where they must play the game from start to finish with a single continuous timer running (as opposed to timing each level individually).

Deranged Rabbits supports game controllers.

Multiplayer

Deranged Rabbits supports local multiplayer up to four players. No online competitive play has been planned as of yet due to the high impact of latency, but players can compete for global leaderboard rankings in the speedrun mode.
